Chapter 7

I stood in awe of the massive building in front of me, waiting to be picked up and devoured by its overwhelming size any minute. It was a monstrosity! I knew the William Penn Hotel was fancy, but that statement was underrated in comparison to seeing it in person. John F Kennedy stayed in this hotel, and now my brother is getting married here! My heart was beating fast and hard at this comparison. My mouth fell open at some point, until my uncharacteristically giddy mother nudged me and grabbed my arm to pull me forward. “Bethany, isn’t this just gorgeous?” she gushed. “I can’t believe Ellie was able to book their wedding here. Everyone is going to be thrilled. I’ll bet the food is amazing. After all, it better be, considering how much they probably paid for everything, not that it’s any of my business. Your father and I had a very modest wedding compared to what you kids do these days.” My mother made her usual tsk-tsk sounds when it came to money and materialistic expenses, but she quickly redeemed herself when she saw a few early guests making their way up the inviting path that led to the entrance of the grand hotel. She waved and briskly walked over to greet them, leaving my father and me standing in awkward silence on the sidewalk. My father chuckled then winked at me and said, “I raised smarty-pants kids, all right. You kids did good for yourselves. Your mother and I are proud of you and your brother.” He cleared his throat, mildly embarrassed for showing his emotion, and the two of us—followed by my mother, who had now walked back towards us—made our way to the main doors of the William Penn Hotel. For someone who scolded over the “extravagance of one day,” she sure was eating this up.

If I can make it through the next six or so hours without any further mishap, it will be a miracle. I’d had to call my mother for help after I ripped the zipper on the back of my bridesmaid dress. I was mortified that I had ruined the dress and would then somehow ruin my brother’s wedding in the process. As much as I didn’t care for Ellie, I loved my brother, and even though it was a love-hate relationship at times, I wanted this day to be everything he dreamed of. Thankfully, my mother was a genius when it came to sewing, and she was able to fix the zipper in record time. Of course, I got an ear full of how irresponsible I was - like it was my fault the zipper decided to malfunction! I was then subjected to riding with my parents to the ceremony, still cringing and hoping that Seth had sobered up by now. After the zipper issue, I decided to text Seth back, but he never responded. Before I could become angry and react, my parents had shown up and I didn’t have time to worry about it.
